About Seniors Helping Seniors South Metro Denver & Douglas County

Building a Legacy

SHS South Denver was started 2012 by Karen Tanner-Smith and Mark Smith. This couple was motivated by their own experiences with Karen’s father, Chuck, who moved in with them after doing poorly in a nursing home. During his stay, the Smiths helped to transport Chuck to doctor’s appointments, ran errands, and helped with the daily transfers from bed to wheelchair. “We believe with all of our hearts,” said Karen, “that my dad lived longer and better because of his time with us.”

What they also discovered was how hard it was to get additional help when they needed it. “It was so difficult to find a male companion for dad who could provide quality care and could be someone he could relate to,” said Karen.  It was that motivation that inspired Karen and her husband Mark to bring Seniors Helping Seniors care into their own community to provide quality care for older adults and to reduce the stress and worry for caregivers who need to rely on additional help.

“We love helping and working with seniors,” said Mark.  “We love the model of finding Providers who have the ‘heart of a volunteer’ and can relate to the seniors that they care for.  We saw what did and didn’t work in our experiences and are excited to be able to provide the best and most loving care possible to each and every senior.”
